MOVIE: The Forge - It Takes a Man to Make a Man
Monday Aug 26, 2024
Monday Aug 26, 2024
Guests: Mike Thornberry, Stephen Bryan, Aaron Ulmer, and Chris Housewright
We recorded this podcast to use for our parent podcast at the school, which also has a video element, so if you’d like to watch this podcast, check out the PCA YouTube page.
The Forge is the latest movie from the incredible Christian movie producers the Kendrick Brothers (Alex, Stephen, and Shannon), who brought Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous, and War Room to the big screens. This new movie is about the process of making a man - and it’s a powerful story of prayer, forgiveness, redemption, and salvation!
The Forge opens in theaters across the country on Friday, August 23, 2024.
In the movie, Joshua Moore (older man, business owner) asks a younger Isaiah some important questions that cause Isaiah to pause and evaluate his life and future - here are those questions:
- 5 years from now, where do you want to be?
- What ways do you want to grow in the next year?
- What kind of man do you want to be?
- What do you want people to think when they see you coming?
The Forge isn’t a “self-help” movie about making better decisions - Isaiah surrenders his life to Christ and as he begins to follow Jesus, his life and decisions are radically changed! The Forge also highlights the importance of walking in community - surrounded by others to hold us accountable and encourage us on our journey!

BOOK: Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven (Session 3 of 3)

Guests: Gabe Boyd and Mike Thornberry
Chapter 7 Stand Up to the Bullies
If you want to change the world…don’t back down from the sharks.
Chapter 8 Rise to the Occasion
If you want to change the world…be your very best in the darkest moments.
No matter how dark it gets, you must complete the mission.
- Mission above the man - Jim Eliot - he is no fool to give up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.
Chapter 9 Give People Hope
If you want to change the world…start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud.
The power of one person to unite the group, the power of one person to inspire those around him, to give them hope.
Hope is the most powerful force in the universe.
Chapter 10 Never, Ever Quit!
If you want to change the world…don’t ever, ever ring the bell.
If you fill your days with pity, sorrowful for the way you have been treated, bemoaning your lot in life, blaming your circumstances on someone or something else, then life will be long and hard. If, on the other hand, you refuse to give up on your dreams, stand tall and strong against the odds–then life will be what you make of it–and you can make it great. Never, ever, ring the bell!

Chapter 4 Life’s Not Fair - Drive On!
If you want to change the world…get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward…
Dan - we live in a fallen world, sin has corrupted everything, we should expect unfairness…
- Jesus was the only perfect person - and look how the world treated him - unfairly…we should expect the same…
Those that strived to be the very best expected that they would be rewarded for their stellar performance.
Chapter 5 Failure Can Make You Stronger
If you want to change the world…don’t be afraid of The Circus
The Circus, which had started as a punishment for failure, was making us stronger, faster, and more confident in the water. Marc and I were determined not to allow The Circus to beat us.
You will pay for your failures. But, if you persevere, if you let those failures teach you and strengthen you, then you will be prepared to handle life’s toughest moments.
I realized that the past failures had strengthened me, taught me that no one is immune from mistakes.
Chapter 6 You Must Dare Greatly
If you want to change the world…slide down the obstacle headfirst.
Those who live in fear of failure, or hardship, or embarrassment will never achieve their potential.

Monday Aug 05, 2024
Guests: Gabe Boyd and Mike Thornberry
Chapter 1 Start Your Day with a Task Completed
- Make your bed - physical
- Time with the Lord - spiritual
Gabe - we live in a chaotic and undisciplined world…this is one thing I can control.
Making my bed correctly was not going to be an opportunity for praise. It was expected of me.
- Don’t look for the praise of men…Col. 3:23
Chapter 2 You Can’t Go It Alone
If you want to change the world…find someone to help you paddle.
Seven men, all working together
The small rubber boat made us realize that no man could make it through training alone.
Now, lying in bed, all I felt was self-pity…but, my wife Georgeann, reminded me of who I was
- Tough love
- Good spouse - calling you up to all that God has for you…
Chapter 3 Only the Size of Your Heart Matters
Instructor challenged a guy - “prove me wrong” (motivation)

Uncovering Our Motivations
Monday Jul 29, 2024
Monday Jul 29, 2024
Looking at the story of David, Nabal, and Abigail in 1 Samuel 25
This is the question I want each of us to wrestle with - why are we doing what we’re doing? What is our true motivation behind our decisions?
Good friends - a community of individuals who can challenge you to think about your decisions - is such a blessing - build that community!!!
The Chosen - if you’re looking to learn more about the person and life of Jesus, reading God’s Word is the BEST way - but watching The Chosen is a great addition as well.

Wait on the Lord
Monday Jul 15, 2024
Monday Jul 15, 2024
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 27:14
Feel stuck in a place, job, relationship? In a difficult situation? What’s the plan? Wait on the Lord.
- “On the Lord” is the most important part of that encouragement - not your plan, but His.
- Wait - trust, obey, listen, learn.
- Wait doesn’t mean “do nothing”
- You can work while you wait
- Grow deeper - Jer. 6:16 - ask for the ancient paths and walk in them
- Serve others - look around at how you can help others…
- Be confident (vs. 3) - decision, not a feeling
- Don’t walk to the right or to the left - don’t take a misstep
- Let the Lord strengthen your heart - waiting is preparation time for the next opportunity/challenge
- Waiting on the Lord isn’t easy - “be of good courage” - it takes courage to wait, to trust the Lord
- Life is a series of seasons - just because this season is tough, doesn’t mean that you’re not growing and getting ready for next season…

Demo Day - Embracing Change in Your Life
Monday Jul 01, 2024
Monday Jul 01, 2024
Best part of a new project - demo day
Bible calls this sanctification - to set apart, make holy - consecrate (with force to make sacred)
Tear up the carpeting
- NO going back!
- You see all the EXTRA work that you didn’t know you had before…
- It’s Worth it!
I want to be a better man, a better husband, a better dad, a better employer/ee, a better friend, a better…
Biblical principles of change…
- Romans 12 - God is in the business of change - don’t conform to the old patterns, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…
- Ephesians 4 - put off the old self, put on the new self…
- Colossians 3 - put to death what is earthly - put on as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive…And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
- God is prepared for us to move in a new direction - Deuteronomy 17 - the laws concerning Israel’s kings - they didn’t even have a king…
- God’s principles are timeless - He doesn’t change - the real change we need in our lives is the constant transformation of our old selves into the image of Jesus…
5 Things to Help You Change
- Read more - you become a more reflective person, less thrown about why the winds and wilds of the day…
- Deepen solid relationships with people who challenge you to be better…
- Honest assessment of your situation, life, attitude, circumstances - the carpeting is old, it needs to be torn up and tossed out…
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help - Biblical counseling, mature Christian friend, God’s Word as a light unto your feet and a lamp unto your path…
- It’s Worth it - it will cost you, but it’s worth it…

Next Steps: Faithful and Fruitful
Monday Jun 10, 2024
Monday Jun 10, 2024
Abide in Christ - Andrew Murray
Vine - plant that is only for the fruit
- How can you tell the vine that has the most fruit?
- It hangs the lowest - humility is the key…
Self-assessment
- Be quick to listen
- Not listen quickly…then move on…
- If you want a different song, stop playing the same notes
- Change is hard, but there are times when it’s necessary…
Take the next right step
- Don’t complicate things
- Don’t make excuses - do the will of your father
Jesus our example
- Didn’t make excuses
- Did the will of his father
Consecrate yourself
- Sacred - set apart - choose to live differently, other-worldly…
- I’m so busy - those are decisions you’re making - your choices
- You’ll reap what you sow…
- Your decisions demonstrate your priorities
