Living with Purpose and Priority (Building Altars Part II)
Monday Feb 26, 2024
Monday Feb 26, 2024
What do you want said about you at your funeral…?
Kind of a pointless question - people are going to say nice things about you - it’s your funeral, celebration of life…
Go back to Genesis 26:25 - build altars, pitch tents, dig wells…
So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac’s servants dug a well. Genesis 26:25
Build altars
- Comparison with pitching tents…
- Pitching tents is important too…just not as important…what will people remember you by - those things that are your top priority
- 1 Timothy 4:8 - training for godliness - compared to your physical training - so you need to do things in the physical world with excellence, dedication -”bodily training is of some value” - but training in righteousness has value for this life AND the next… and then do things in the spiritual world BETTER!
Building altars, pitching tents…
- Pitching tents is also important - need to have physical, material things in proper perspective as well…
- Your home, work, things - don’t allow them to become idols
- Examples - kids sports, keep in perspective - coach who wouldn’t take trophies for 2nd place - but I was there for 2nd grade football…
IF - and only if you have these two things in their proper perspective, can you see the importance of digging wells…
- Being a blessing to others…
- God’s economy - what if what you sacrifice here is stored up for you in heaven?
- Sacrifice and buy a cheaper car - so that you can use that money to bless others - what if that becomes a blessing to you for eternity?
- Focus isn’t on your prosperity - temporary wealth and comfort - but your posterity - your legacy - children, both physical and spiritual…
- Children - physical and spiritual - who are you investing in?
IF you’re build tents and pitching altars, you won’t see the needs around you, won’t want to make the sacrifice to be a blessing to others - you’ll give from your excess…and that includes your time, talents and treasure…

Building Altars

So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac’s servants dug a well. Genesis 26:25
What’s the difference between building and pitching?
Building vs. Pitching
More permanent vs. More temporary
Costlier vs. Cheaper
Planning involved vs. Can just pitch a tent just about anywhere
Skill/labor involved vs. Just about anyone can pitch a tent
Building an altar - metaphor/ picture of your spiritual life/dwelling
Pitching a tent - metaphor/picture of your physical life/dwelling
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
The comparison - you should spend more time, energy, and resources on building your spiritual life than your temporary physical existence…
Time - how does your time compare between what you’re investing in building your spiritual life vs. your physical life?
Talents - how are you using the talents that God has blessed you with to build your spiritual life - His eternal kingdom - vs. building your physical existence?
Treasure - how are you using the blessings that God has given you - for your own personal pleasure and comfort or to be a blessing to others?
Digging a well
- If you’re not doing the building and pitching correctly, you won’t be able to dig the wells…
- More concerned about yourself, won’t be focused on others…
- For the flourishing of the community - you are blessed to be a blessing…
- Not for your prosperity, but your posterity - those who come after you - leaving a legacy for the next generation…
- What wells are you digging for others?

Are You a Winner?
Monday Jan 22, 2024
Monday Jan 22, 2024
Guests: Preston and Parker Panetti
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” Mark 8:34-36
Steps for Success:
- Setting correct goals
- What are your goals for life?
- Are you building your life on the rock…or the sand?
- Evaluating yourself
- Honest and thorough self-assessment…often…is important
- Don’t be afraid of asking other wise individuals in your life for their assessment as well
- Growing your heart, mind, and strength
- This is an ongoing process - once the seed of success is planted, you need to allow it to grow and mature
- Look to grow and mature in all aspects of your life, don’t allow the Enemy to get you to become one-dimensional
- Building strong community
- The Enemy wants you to be isolated and alone - look to build a strong community of wise counsel
- Remember friends are people who tell you the most truth, who seek your best even if it costs them!
- Inviting wise counsel
- Look for constructive criticism, words of wisdom and correction may sting for a minute, but will be sweet in the long-run
- Inviting wise counsel means that you have to ignore unwise counsel - be careful who you let speak into your life
- Discipling younger believers
- Everyone needs a “Paul” to pour truth into them…and a “Timothy” to pour truth into!
- If you don’t have that “Paul” at this moment, at least find a “Timothy” to pour into
- Reaching lost people
- One of the greatest motivations for growth and maturing is having to answer the questions of others
- Don’t be so focused on your own journey that you forget to take others with you!
- Expanding your heart, mind, and strength
- Even Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, and in favor with God and with man (Luke 2:52) - and so should you!
- If you’re not expanding…your probably shrinking

Who Are You Listening To?
Monday Jan 15, 2024
Monday Jan 15, 2024
Guest: Parker Panetti
Different times, places, and cultures have different “heroes” or men who are elevated, appreciated, and valued for a variety of attributes. The Spartans valued warriors, the Athenians valued the intellect - today different people are valued in our culture for things such as wealth and athletic ability. As a young man looking to grow and mature, who are you looking to emulate, to follow, to allow to speak into your life?
While this is a fun and informative conversation and concept to wrestle with, the reality is that Jesus is the only man worthy of our emulation. Scripture says that Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), the image of the invisible God, and the firstborn of all creation (Colossians 1:15). This year as you look to grow and mature as a man, consider the model that Jesus is as a servant-leader, as one who was willing to lay down his life for others, as one obedient to the will of his Father. Spend time learning more about Jesus - and as you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you!

Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis
It’s always winter, but never Christmas…
The Hunger Games - how did President Snow go bad?
God revealed His plan of redemption and restoration in the Garden, immediately following man’s sin - see Genesis 3:15
The Old Testament of Scripture is FILLED with so many prophecies about the coming Messiah so that man wouldn’t miss the incredible gift that God was sending for us - some of the most important of those prophecies are found in the Book of Isaiah in chapters 7, 9, and 53. The prophecy that the Messiah would be born in the “little town of Bethlehem” is found in Micah 5:2.
The genealogy of Jesus, the one born of a virgin in the town of Bethlehem, is found in Matthew 1:1-17. Jesus is a descendent of Abraham, the father of the promised nation of spiritual children, and David, the symbol of the king.
In Matthew 1:3, Jesus is said to be a descendent of “Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar” - the twins Perez and Zerah are both mentioned in the lineage of Jesus, but for what reason - because Jesus isn’t just coming once, but twice - and both Perez and Zerah give us insight into what we should be looking for - first, one who “burst forth,” the unexpected one from insignificance; the second, bearing the scarlet thread on his body.
Christmas - everything points to Jesus…
Christmas tree - gifts at the bottom - and it points to the heavens…with a STAR on top - reminds me of Numbers 24 - Balaam’s final oracle - verse 17 - I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel…
O Holy Night, song by Adolphe Adam
O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til He appeared, and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn'

Above all else, guard your heart, for from it comes the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23
You can tell the condition of a marriage by watching/listening to the wife.
Suffering removes shallowness. If you want to go deep with God, you’re going to have to go through difficult times. Tough times produce dependent people - people willing to lean not on their own understanding, but in all their ways they learn to submit to God and trust His goodness and plans - see Proverbs 3:5.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Maybe some of the difficult things you’re going through are going to be used by God for a greater purpose - His purpose - not only in your life, but in the lives of others, to expand the Kingdom of heaven!
Some trust in chariots and some in horses [and some in doctors], but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7 Who will you put your trust in - your business, your health, your education, your past accomplishments…or will you put your trust in the One who created the heavens and the earth and holds all things in His hands?
As they get older, Bruce and Chris have learned to care about “less and less” - God is concerned about people - what are your primary concerns? And sometimes you have to “go 30 miles in” before you see it - you have to go deeper.
