What Does God Value in a Man?

There is a great description of a young David - before he defeated Goliath and before he took the throne of Israel - that I believe gives us a glimpse into the character of a “man after God’s own heart.” These character qualities are not only valuable for us to consider and contemplate, but also to recognize that just a few verses before this description is made of David that God reminded Samuel that “the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

 

What are those character qualities of “the heart” that were important enough for God to record and share with us today - the description of David is found in 1 Samuel 16:18 and is the topic for our discussion today:

 

One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.”
